Amazing second-wave soul from Brenda & The Tabulations -- a mighty look at the group's years on the Top & Bottom label, a time when they really upped their game tremendously! Most tracks here still stay in that beautifully fragile harmony style that first brought the group attention in the 60s, but the overall sound is somewhat more sophisticated too -- very much in the sort of shift some of the New Jersey groups were making at the time, with the same sort of rough and smooth mix you might find on some of The Moments' best records. Brenda's vocals are wonderful -- more rough-edged than some of her contemporaries, which makes them feel very personal -- and the smoother harmonies from The Tabulations are completely free from cliche -- never just useless hanging-on or adornments, but a key part of the vibe of the tunes. Van McCoy produced a good deal of the material here, and the set features titles that include "Stop Sneaking Around", "The Touch Of You", "Scuze Uz Y'All", "A Child No One Wanted", "Don't Make Me Over", "And My Heart Sang Tra La La", "Always & Forever", "A Part Of You", "A Love You Can Depend On", "Where There's A Will", "Lies Lies Lies", and "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue"

Brenda and the Tabulations - The Top and Bottom Records Collection 1969 - 1971
Amazing second-wave soul from Brenda & The Tabulations -- a mighty look at the group's years on the Top & Bottom label, a time when they really upped their game tremendously! Most tracks here still stay in that beautifully fragile harmony style that first brought the group attention in the 60s, but the overall sound is somewhat more sophisticated too -- very much in the sort of shift some of the New Jersey groups were making at the time, with the same sort of rough and smooth mix you might find on some of The Moments' best records. Kool Is Back! Imitations, Interpolations & The Inspiration of Kool & The Gang 1970
Funky stuff inspired by the deepest, funkiest Kool & The Gang work of the 70s -- a set weighed heavily with real obscurities -- with furiously grooving jazzy bits, grainy hard soul versions, steel band numbers and more -- all massively funky in their unique strains of the sound! Much like the other comps in the Le Smoke Disque tributes to classic funk figures, the really dig deep -- with material from rare regional funk singles, cover versions, and tribute tracks from regions as far apart as the midwestern US, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and well beyond. The regional sounds are certainly big factors, the the groove is ultimately pretty faithful to the Kool funk sound -- amazing stuff! Includes "You Best Give It Up" by Jessie & The Mel O Tones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?" by Cane & Able, "Kool Is Back" by La Mars, "Lose Pelos Tiesos" by Rabbits & Carrots, "Funky Granny" by Everyday People, "Jammin With Shorty" (Parts A & B) by Shorty And The Junior Kools, "Give It Up" by The Impossibles, "Funky Stuff" by the Dutch Rhythm Steel And Show Band, "Kool And The Gang" by Tyree Glenn, Jr & Brain Damage, and more
Paul Owen & The Capital City Star Singers - 1974 - jesus in on the mainline
Pass is - 4BBWeekly“Jesus Is On The Mainline” (SongBird LP 231) is an excellent album full of funky gospel soul and is one of my favourite SongBird albums. Information on the album cover about membership of the group, studio recorded and session musicians involved is very scarce. All we know is that besides Paul Owens, Roger Liscomb is singing lead on a few of the songs. On “I’ll Fly Away” they share the lead. So no information about the musicians involved and it’s the music that takes this album to the next level.
